Missy told me to post this in this section a while back.
Day 1:
It was the first night of the Jellicle Ball, and I, being a huge CATS fan, could not pass on the chance to see the musical tour. I threw on my makeup (painted my face as a cat) and went off to the theatre. Little did I know that the show was delayed due to bad weather and was pushed back to 9pm. I already had my makeup on, so I decided to remain in the lobby for an hour and a half.
THE SET:
It was time to open the doors. My seat was in the 4th row on the floor. As I went to find my seat, I took in the beauty of the scenery. As expected, it was humongous, with normal household items towering over the stage. The lighting was a dim blue; it was perfect for establishing the mood of the show. Then the show began.
OVERTURE:
The theatre went dark. The orchestra struck up. Then, out of the darkness, millions of blinking cat eyes were visible, disappearing and reappearing in time with the music. Then the cast came out into the audience and traveled down the aisles, wearing magnificent glowing green cat eyes. Sitting in the fourth row, I watched as a couple of Cats stopped in front of me. One of them was Munkustrap. He made an abrupt stop and there was a moment where him and I made eye contact. Before I knew it, Munk's face was just inches from mine; his paw was raised and he hissed. I played along and did the same to him. The overture was soon over and the cast exited.
JELLICLE SONGS FOR JELLICLE CATS:
The singing and dancing were 100,000 times better than the video! Everything was in tune, and the cast seemed very much absorbed in what was happening. Plus, the music was bouncy and energetic, as it was intended.
THE NAMING OF CATS:
This was the freaky part of the show, where the cast stares into the audience. Some of the cats actually traveled into the audience. I made eye contact with Mungojerrie; it was a cool feeling, but made me a little uncomfortable after a while. But this was cool nonetheless, and I couldn't help but stare at all of the cats.
Vicky's solo dance was just beautiful and amazing, as usual. Sarah Bumgarner executed it very well.
THE OLD GUMBIE CAT:
As mentioned above, the singing and dancing were 100,000 times better than the movie! I also loved how the dance was a little longer than the one in the film. Totally made it better and more livelier. Not to mention that while Tugger's song was starting, one of the "cockroaches" was still dancing around on stage.
THE RUM TUM TUGGER:
Adam Steiner can SING! And he makes for one sexy Tugger. He actually tried to make the role his own, while still remaining true to the character. Seemed like he added a little bit of that Metal Scream to his singing too. Not to mention that Bombalurina is much more seductive than in the video. Her dancing with Tugger was very smooth; not choppy at all. All in all, excellent and very satisfying.
GRIZABELLA THE GLAMOUR CAT:
Poor Griz! Anastasia Lange capture her purrfectly! She actually gave me an epiphany and made me realize that I'm more like Grizabella than I thought. Being able to do that is nothing short of amazing. Not to mention that her and I made eye contact as she was walking off stage. I felt so sorry for her.
BUSTOPHER JONES:
From where I was sitting, Bustopher looked HAWT. He had long, black wavy hair and a very well structured face. His costume looked funny; it looked as if it was made from bathrobe material. But man, can he really belt it out! The actor also added humor to the character, having him almost fall off the top hat as soon as he sat on it, lol. He also tossed a white rose on the stage, which Sillabub later (at the end of intermission) retrieves and gives it to one specific little girl. It was so cute! ^_^
Anyways, a crash is heard. The lights flicker. The cats all think it is Macavity.
MUNGOJERRIE AND RUMPLETEAZER:
I loved the performance of this song!!!! It was so catchy and adorable, and the double-windmill was AMAZING!!!!!! They also basked in the applause before the group catches them, and did a cute little dance after they were caught. Unlike the video, Jerrie and Teazer DID NOT act like they ever got caught; they were their cheerful selves.
OLD DEUTERONOMY:
The only thing I have to say is that Demeter replaced Tantomile and Coricopat when the line "I believe it is Old Deuteronomy" came up. It was kinda cool to hear her say that.
THE JELLICLE BALL:
THIS WAS FRICKIN' AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! The lights were spectacular, the dancing was phenomenal!!!! Tugger wasn't in it for most of the time, though. I think Bombalurina was either paired up with Alonzo or Pouncival in this part, I'm not sure. Then came the mating and the Plato/Victoria dance. I kept my eye on Bomba and Pouncival (the tom she was with during this part). Their choreography was very interesting; it was like they were actually having sex *gasp*. Well, Pouncival was feeling her leg and came in between her legs, then she ended up on top of him (sitting, in fact), and both looked like they were in ecstasy. It was weird, but what can you expect from a couple of cats? Poor Griz was trying to join in, but was shunned (as always ). The cats continued dancing.
MEMORY:
Boy can Anastasia Lange SING!!!!! Her voice was just so filled with emotion that you couldn't help but pity her. Not to mention that she seemed aware of the audience and looked like she tried to prove herself to the audience. It was a very nice (and effective) touch.
INTERMISSION:
Old D sat during the entire intermission. I really felt sorry for him because some people tried to get a picture of him, which is prohibited even during intermission. The end of intermission approached, and the cats (some onstage, some offstage) crawled back onto the stage. I ACTUALLY CAUGHT BOMBA'S ATTENTION DURING THIS!!!!!!! IT WAS SO COOL!!!!!! She and Demeter were entering the stage from the right. I was pretending to be a cat and began staring at the characters onstage. I looked at Bomba and she looked right back at me!!!!!!!! I reached toward her, and she gave me a little smile and flexed her fingers, as if she was going to reach toward me!!!!!! This made me happy (and helped make up for the fact that Tugger did not dance with me earlier).
MOMENTS OF HAPPINESS:
Old D's voice was amazing, but Sillabub's voice was just frickin' ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!!! It was so pretty and angelic!!!!! It made me happy. ^^
GUS THE THEATRE CAT:
The actor who played Bustopher also played Gus. He also added some humor to this role. And Jellylorum was awesome too (much better than the video, in my opinion). It really looked like they were father/daughter. Then, of course, came Growltiger's Last Stand.
GROWLTIGER'S LAST STAND:
Wow. Just...wow. This performance was so hilarious and great!!!!!! It seemed as if Growltiger and Griddlebone were competing for the spotlight (seriously, they were pushing each other out of the way). Their relationship is questionable; everytime Growltiger tried to make a move on her, she pushed him away. It was very funny, though, but the funniest part was when Ghengis pointed his sword towards Growltiger's goods. XD
SKIMBLESHANKS:
This guy was better than Geoffrey Garrat!!!!! He was very enthusiastic, and the train was just plain COOL! The music made me want to jump up and dance to the song, lol.
MACAVITY:
WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! MACAVITY!!!!!!!!!!! HE WAS HAWT!!!!!!!!!!!! But what really surprised me was Demeter's singing. Usually she sounds sexy, if not a little seductive, but in this performance she sounded timid and cautious. It was a nice change. Cara Cooley (Bombalurina), however, was completely seductive. Her voice was a little high-pitched, but it actually fit the song really well. Also, she seemed to let her body swing freely during this song, which made her look even more seductive.
THE FIGHT:
MUNKUSTRAP WAS QUICKLY TAKEN OUT AND ALONZO KICKED MACAVITY'S @$$!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention that this production was a little heavy on the Bomba/Munkus and Deme/Alonzo pairings (Deme went to thank Alonzo for saving her and Bomba went to check and see if Munkus was alright).
MAGICAL MR. MISTOFFELEES:
Chris Mackenthun can friggin' DANCE! Just wow! Confetti was shot from the stage; it was really cool! I loved it! How somebody can do so many turns on one foot is beyond me.
MEMORY:
While I didn't cry during this song, my jaw dropped at Anastasia Lange's singing. All emotion she was holding back previously just POURED OUT when she sang "Touch me!" I was like . And then when Griz fell over, I was like "OMG is she okay?" It was very emotional, stunning, and beautiful. I almost cried when she was going to the Heavyside Layer though, I was so happy for her.
THE AD-DRESSING OF CATS:
This is where Old D really shines. He really belts it out during this number. And the choreography was cool too. The show ended and, after the applause, some of the cats came out into the audience while the others played with the confetti onstage. I got Misto's attention here! I reached out to him and he gave me a HUGE grin and reached out to me!
CURTAIN CALL:
The only characters that received a lot of screaming were: Tugger, Misto, Old D, Munkus, and Grizabella. I think I was the only person who screamed when Bomba came out, lol. Oh, and what came after the curtain call was AWESOME!!!! Bomba and Tugger were alone onstage, she beckoned him, he came, she shoved him onto the floor, then stepped over him, and they proceeded to exit stage right. Tugger gave his little "RAWR" before he left with Bomba. This made me VERY happy!
Day 2:
I'm going to cut this short because what is stated above also applies to the second performance I saw.
This time, I was sitting in the very first seat in the very first row. I ran into Munkustrap again (he was in my face longer this time ^^). And I recieved a VERY AWESOME, COOL, AMAZING surprise during Tugger's song!!!! The musical interlude in his song came, which is when Tugger comes out into the audience and chooses someone to dance with. I thought that his choice was already set, that he was supposed to leave the stage from stage right and choose someone there, but no. The interlude came, and I saw him walking in my direction (I also had CATS makeup on for this performance). Before I knew it, he jumped in front of me and held out his hands!!!!!!!!!!! I DANCED WITH TUGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And at the end of the dance, he WRAPPED ME IN HIS ARMS!!!!!!!!!! The spotlight was on us and he turned me over to the audience and pointed at me, and they applauded!!!! And towards the end of his song, when he was back onstage, he looked and pointed at me, then held his hand to his ear and mouth and mouthed the words "Call me"! It was THE BEST night of my life!!!!
In short, the show was absolutely amazing, much better than the video. One thing I find weird is that everytime Bomba and I were staring at each other, I got bashful.
The cast did not give out autographs and did not come out into the lobby after the show, so I gave my drawings to the security guard and asked him if he would deliver them to the actors. I also told him to say that the drawings are from "the CatGirl in the front row", lol. Even though I did not get to see the cast after the show, I believe some of them (Munku, Tugger, Misto, Grizabella, and Bomba) remember me because I was the only one with my face painted AND was in the first few rows AND came to 2 performances.
Not to mention that I took some of the confetti from the Mr. Mistoffelees number after the show.
